A delicious bowl of ramen is the ultimate comfort soup. It’s warm, cozy, and so easy! As newlyweds, we eat this frequently. It’s super affordable, filling, and fast! However, Top Ramen isn’t very healthy for you. All the preservatives and additives that give Top Ramen a long shelf life are not things I want to eat all the time. Hence, the Ultimate Ramen Soup Mix!

I used to steer clear of prepackaged mixes if I could help it because homemade always tastes best! Right? However, home-cooked also takes more time. So, think of this soup mix like homemade taco seasoning. While I still believe homemade is best, there’s nothing wrong with cutting some shortcuts and having savory and richly flavored ramen soup from a homemade soup mix!

The spicy warmth from ginger, ancho chili powder, a touch of smoked paprika, and freshly ground black pepper mix with garlic powder, onion powder, and parsley. Red pepper flakes give it a little extra punch. Brown sugar adds a hint of sweetness, and furikake gives it a small hint of seaweed which is essential in Japanese cuisine.

Hold Up! What’s Furikake??

In Hawaii, furikake is put on everything. Think of it as a type of condiment like ketchup…but a dry condiment. It goes on rice, spam musubi, and even on popcorn! It mainly consists of dried seaweed and toasted sesame seeds. The flavor is a little briny, slightly nutty, and has a pleasant umami taste. Before you think that furikake is impossibly hard to find, don’t worry! It isn’t. It can easily be found on Amazon or in the specialty section of a grocery store.

A Meal For Everyone!

This soup is ridiculously simple to throw together. It can easily be made vegan or vegetarian. Instead of chicken or beef broth, use vegetable broth. It tastes amazing with only vegetables. For some added protein, throw some tofu in there! Whether you are a college student living off of top ramen in the microwave, if you are a newlywed trying to keep a strict budget, or if you have a large family who loves simple and homey food, this soup is for everyone! It can be as basic as broth with noodles, or it can be extra fancy with jammy eggs, tofu, bok choy, fish cake, pickled ginger, bean sprouts, and soup dumplings. …Can you tell that I really love ramen? 😀

Jazzed Up Ramen

I love how versatile ramen soup is. There are so many ways you can go! However, to make things easier, here are three basic combos I love! They are tried and true pairings that can easily utilize leftovers from a previous meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp onion powder
  • 1 Tbsp onion flakes
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp furikake
  • 1/2 Tbsp parsley
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ancho chili powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp freshly ground himalayan pink salt
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  • In a small mason jar, add all the spices, sugar, and furikake together. Shake to mix thoroughly. Ramen soup mix can store in a dry dark place up to 6 months, but I always use it before then.
  • For one serving of ramen, use 2 cups of broth and 1 tsp of ramen mix.

Notes

  • If you truly want to make this instant ramen soup mix, feel free to crush up some bouillon cubes to your soup mix.
  • As always, taste the soup and alter it to your own personal taste! If you want less salt, don’t use a whole teaspoon next time. If you love the heat from peppers, add more red pepper flakes.
